Questions about outbreaks
What is the difference between an outbreak, an epidemic and a pandemic?
An outbreak is more cases of a disease than expected in one place over a short time, such as a cholera outbreak in a single region. An epidemic is a larger rise in cases spreading through a population or a wider area. A pandemic is an epidemic that has spread across several countries or continents and affects a large number of people.
Where does the outbreak information on this page come from?
Every entry comes from an official public-health agency — the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the UK Health Security Agency. We show the headline, date and a short summary and link to the full report on the agency’s own website.
How often is Global Health Watch updated?
The page checks every source automatically once an hour. The time of the last check is shown at the top of the page, and each report shows the date the agency published it.
Should I cancel a trip because of an outbreak listed here?
Not on the strength of this page alone. Many outbreaks affect a small area or people with specific exposures, such as farm workers or hospital staff. Check your government’s official travel advice and the CDC or NHS travel health pages for your destination, and speak to a travel health clinic or your doctor.
How can I protect myself from infectious diseases when travelling?
Book a travel health appointment well before you go, because some vaccines need more than one dose — the NHS suggests about 8 weeks ahead. Keep routine vaccines such as measles up to date, prevent insect bites where mosquito-borne diseases spread, be careful with food and drinking water, wash your hands often, and get medical help quickly if you develop a fever during or after your trip.
