How this works
Perimenopause is the time before your periods stop for good, when hormone levels rise and fall unevenly. It usually starts in your 40s and can last several years. Menopause is reached 12 months after your last period.
In the UK, NICE guidance says women over 45 with typical symptoms can be diagnosed from their symptoms alone, usually without a blood test — which is why a clear list of your symptoms is so useful at an appointment.
Good to know
- This checklist does not diagnose perimenopause; many of these symptoms have other causes (for example thyroid problems or anaemia).
- See a doctor promptly for bleeding after sex, between periods or after menopause, or very heavy bleeding.
- Symptoms before age 40 should always be checked — they can be a sign of premature ovarian insufficiency.
