Is it a phobia? A 5-question check

  1. The fear has lasted 6 months or longer.
  2. Coming near the thing (or even thinking about it) causes strong anxiety or panic almost every time.
  3. You go out of your way to avoid it, or put up with it only with intense fear.
  4. You know the fear is bigger than the real danger.
  5. It gets in the way of work, school, relationships or everyday plans.

How this works

A specific phobia is an intense, lasting fear of a particular thing or situation that is out of proportion to the real danger, leads to avoidance, and causes distress or problems in daily life. The five questions follow those features. Around 1 in 10 adults has a specific phobia at some point.

Phobias respond very well to treatment. Exposure therapy — facing the fear in small, planned steps with a therapist — helps most people, sometimes in only a few sessions.
